Cystic Fibrosis Medications Now Available In England

Health officials said that cystic fibrosis patients will now get a life-extending medication on the NHS in England. Following months of discussions with Vertex Pharmaceuticals, the manufacturer of Orkambi, NHS England finalized an agreement. Now, the medications that help in decreasing breathing issues and advancing the lung functions will be available for patients within 30 Days. Moreover, the specialty of these medications is that they are safe for use in patients of age above 2 Years.

This agreement will also allow access for two medications, namely Kalydeco and Symkevi, manufactured by Vertex. Both drugs are useful in treating patients showing cystic fibrosis symptoms. While Kalydeco is employed for patients of 12 Months & above ages, the use of Symkevi is limited to patients with more than 12 Years. Before finalizing a confidential and compromising agreement, the company had planned to charge approximately £100,000 for each patient per year.

Through this agreement, these medications are supposed to offer help to approximately 50% of the 10,000 patients in the U.K. Cystic fibrosis can trigger life-threatening damage to the lungs. It is a genetic health condition in which the average life of 50% of such patients is 32 Years. The latest announcement has spread a positive atmosphere among the campaigners and patients living with this condition.

On a similar note, recent research highlighted that the consumption of one cup of yogurt on a regular basis can aid in decreasing the chances of lung cancer development. In the latest study carried out at Vanderbilt University Medical Centre in Nashville, Tennesse, researchers noted that the risk of lung cancer was decreased by approximately 20% in patients who were eating yogurt regularly when compared to the patients with the history of not consuming yogurt on daily basis. Moreover, the study published in the journal JAMA Oncology stated that the addition of a high-fiber diet helped to decrease the threat of lung cancer by approximately 30%.
